SPRING 2011

An Equestrian Gateway at Giant City Park, Mackanda IL

Person Retreat

Unseen exposure focuses on maximizing an individuals experience to the outdoors but closing off the relationship between them and the busy world. The exposure to the outdoor environment is hidden behind various screens allowing one to feel secluded but not closed off.

The Lodge

The lodge is particularly placed as a gateway to the living quarters and its amenities. Additionally, the welcome center for the stables is located on the other side of the street directly across from the gateway house allowing a direct connection between the two and easy maintenance.

Site Plan

The living quarters are placed sporadically around the land allowing a more private escape feeling. The Lodge is placed at the entrance of the site and is used as a welcome center to greet all guests. On the other site of the main road, the primary horse facilities can be found. These facilities include a management center, primary stable facility, educational arena, dressage arena, a private therapy arena, and a western arena. Surrounding the entire site, various horse trails can be found.

Exploded View

This view shows a two person retreat focusing in on the exterior first floor screened patio, the kitchen which opens up to a patio to allow for maximum seating and gathering, and the bedroom/ living area which is separated by a screening element, mimicking the exterior design. Ample amounts of windows and sliding doors are used to help draw the outside environment inward to the living quaters.
